Winnington Ingram Trainee Position 2017 - 2018

Opening date for enquiries: 1st November 2016
Closing date for applications: 31st January 2017
The salary is 19,243 including London Weighting Allowance

This busy academic and research library of an Institute serving a national and international clientele is housed and administered with the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies in pleasant, newly refurbished premises within the University of London Senate House. The library has been expanding rapidly over the last decade, not only in its intake of books and journals, but also in the services offered to readers, especially computing resources. Demands on the library staff are ever increasing. The Winnington-Ingram Appeal Fund was set up in order to secure the annual Library Traineeship in perpetuity, which will help to keep the Library open for six days a week (Monday to Saturday), and to maintain a postal borrowing and telephone enquiry service. This post, which has been established in memory of Professor Reginald Winnington-Ingram, former Director of the Institute and President of the Hellenic Society, is unique in providing a year's experience and training in a classics library for postgraduate students prior to their entry to Library School.

As one of a full-time staff of five or six, the Trainee assists at the Library desk with the running of book loan services, the answering of bibliographic, membership and general enquiries, and, behind the scenes, with the processing and repair of books and periodicals. Training and practical experience are also given in most other aspects of library and information work, and opportunities exist for visits to other libraries in London. Although not essential, it would be preferable for applicants to possess, or be about to obtain, a first degree in Classics or related subject, and to have some knowledge of Latin and/or Greek plus one European language (in addition to English). Details of work experience and computer skills should be included in submissions.
